Positioning: Focusing on key scientific issues that must be solved in the diagnosis of major diseases, health assessment, and the prevention and treatment of serious or merging infectious diseases in China, the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematics and Life Sciences conducts researches on mathematical models, multi-scale data analysis and parameter estimation in the occurrence, evolution and prevention of diseases, the numerical calculation of high-dimensional systems and so on, and develops basic theories and analysis methods of mathematical models in the occurrence, evolution and prevention of serious diseases, with the aim of providing consultation and suggestions for the decision-making of national public health and disease prevention and control departments, and providing cooperation platform and innovation base for crossover researches and academic exchanges in applied mathematics, statistics, computing, medicine, and public health and preventive medicine at home and abroad, thus bringing the theoretical research and application level of biomathematics of China to the international advanced level.

Representative achievements: Supported by the projects such as the key and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and other major national special projects in the fields of liver diseases and AIDS, the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematics and Life Sciences has got a deep understanding of the occurrence and evolution of the diseases and the major scientific problems in the prevention and treatment of serious infectious diseases and established a series of theories, methods and techniques for solving the problems with more than ten years of unremitting efforts. Funded by the Tianyuan Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Center hosted the " Summer School for Graduate Students in Biomathematics" in 2014 and 2015 consecutively. The Center is cooperating with Shaanxi Normal University and the NCAIDS/STD on key projects of multi-scale biological systems and data analysis. The Center, by establishing dynamic models and statistical models, has conducted in-depth researches on key scientific issues such as the transmission risk of COVID-19 epidemic, development trend prediction, and the impact of resumption of work and school on the second outbreak of the epidemic in phase, providing a quantitative basis for scientific epidemic prevention and evaluation of the effectiveness of prevention and control measures. The basic reproduction number of other emerging infectious diseases estimated by the Center has become an important basis for the international community to judge the severity of the epidemic in China; and it revealed that media reports have timeliness for the prevention and control of sudden infectious diseases for the first time, which gained wide attention from Chinese and foreign media. The Center obtained the mobility patterns of HIV-infected persons and AIDS patients, which providing detailed information for the NCAIDS/STD to learn about their activities and destinations and support for regional prevention and treatment strategies and optimizing medical resource allocation, thus having great guiding significance and being highly recognized by public health experts. By establishing methods such as transmission dynamic models and parameter estimation, the Center accurately predicted the transmission trend and control effect of the Hepatitis B virus, which provided quantitative reference and policy recommendations for the China CDC to develop its "14th Five-Year Plan". The Center also have developed a series of methods of genome sequencing data analysis, and some of the results have been widely used as core methods in this field.
Research content: In response to the national strategic needs of disease diagnosis, health assessment and effective prevention and treatment of major infectious diseases, the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematics and Life Sciences, focusing on key scientific issues in the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases in China and supported by the key project "Multi-scale Biological System Dynamics and Data Analysis of Typical Diseases" of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, carries out researches across mathematics, medicine, public health, applied statistics and information science, developing original theories and methods for disease diagnosis, health assessment as well as the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Prediction and early warning of novel emerging infectious diseases based on model and data;
The research on multi-scale coupled system dynamics, non-smooth dynamic systems and evolutionary dynamic models;
The research on mathematical methods and statistical analysis in precise diagnosis and treatment of serious infectious diseases/tumors;
High-performance computing algorithm analysis of biological system model;
Statistical analysis and multi-scale data fusion of biological systems.
