Positioning: Focusing on key scientific issues about the intelligent exploration technologies in China, XJTU-BGP Research Center for Mathematics and Intelligent Technology in Petroleum Exploration, by promoting the in-depth application and integrated innovation of the new-generation information technologies such as big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence in the petroleum geophysical industry and the energy exploration field, accelerates the transformation of geophysical prospecting technologies, which will support BGP to take the lead in the era of intelligent development. The Center focuses on the research and development of intelligent major oil and gas exploration and basic technologies for the intellectualization of the oil and gas industry, including the super-resolution inversion based on the amplitude-preserving high-resolution seismic data imaging with AI and the lithology and physical parameters of media, the information representation of seismic data, and the multi-dimensional representation of geological targets, which provide technical support for the intelligent development of the oil and gas exploration and development technologies in China. Representative achievements: Led by Professor Gao Jinghuai and supported by major and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, projects of the 863 Program and major special National Oil and Gas projects, the Center has got a deep understanding of the scientific problems in seismic wave exploration of oil and gas reservoirs after over 10-year unremitting efforts, establishing a series of theories, methods and technologies to solve these problems. The Center has published 167 SCI papers, with one achievement was ranked Top 30 in the Annual Meeting of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2009; received 36 authorized invention patents and 3 software copyrights; and has several achievements evaluated as "innovative" and "with outstanding results which provide important support for demonstration projects" by the 863 Project Identification Expert Panel and the Acceptance Expert Panel for National Oil and Gas Demonstration Projects. The expert panel, with Yao Zhenxing, an Academician of CAS, as the director of the Identification Committee, believed that these achievements "establish an innovative theory for the effective characterization and identification of continental lithologic reservoirs in China, with 9 core technologies developed, and the theory and technologies reach the international leading level. " These achievements have been widely applied in Changqing Oilfield, CNOOC, Daqing Oilfield, etc., yielding economic benefits of more than 4.6 billion yuan, and also in oil and gas exploration regions in 10 countries abroad, resulting an additional 7.34 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Gao Jinghuai and his team have won 1 First Class Science and Technology Award of the Ministry of Education (in 2016, with XJTU as the first contributor, and Gao Jinghuai as the first winner), and 1 Second Class Science and Technology Award of the Ministry of Education (in 2006, with XJTU as the first contributor, and Gao Jinghuai as the first winner), and one Second Class Science and Technology Award of Shaanxi Province (2010, with XJTU as the second contributor, and Gao Jinghuai as the second winner). In 2013, Professor Gao Jinghuai won the Packer C. Chen Excellent Article Award.
Research directions: Targeted at the exploration and development of unconventional and deep oil and gas, which is a major national strategic need, and focusing on common key scientific issues in the seismic wave exploration of unconventional and deep oil and gas in China, XJTU-BGP Research Center for Mathematics and Intelligent Technology in Petroleum Exploration conducts crossover interdisciplinary researches on mathematics, earth physics, geology, information science and the like with the development of AI theories and methods as the breakthrough, and establish original theories, methods, and technical systems for AI exploration and development of unconventional and deep oil and gas suitable for the geological characteristics of China.
