The Monge-Ampère equation is a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE that arises in many applications including optimal transport, prescribed Gauss curvature, and the mathematical theory of atmospheric flow. In this pair of lectures we will discuss classical results, recent developments, and some open questions about this equation. The first lecture will be aimed at graduate students, and the second will be a research-level talk.
